Tall Tales Walking Tour

We invite you to take our walking tour of winning lies posted on various buildings in downtown Burlington. It is fun way to get your steps in! This guide concentrates on the downtown locations. The best place to start is at 417 Milwaukee Avenue where there is parking in front of Reineman’s. Directions are below the map.

1. Step out of the parking lot, back to Milwaukee Avenue, turn left and you will find our 2012 winner on the left at Bigelow’s.

2. Return to Reineman’s where your can read our champion from 1935. Head north, walking to the  corner of the building, turning left . . .

3. You are now on West Chestnut Street where our 1951 winner is displayed. Walk north toward West Chestnut Street, hike the one-block Mill Street, cross over Pine Street . . . 

4. Low Daily has two plaques highlighting our winners from 1932 and 1933. Proceed toward town and cross over Milwaukee Avenue . . .

5. Fred’s Parkview showcases our 2001 top dog, down the street a short way . . . 

6. The Main Event displays our winner from 2014, continue on . . .

7. A stately building on the corner once the Bank of Burlington features our 1937 winning entry. Turn left, walking down East Chestnut Street to the end. Best to use the cross walk to get to the other side, turn left and walk the sidewalk up the street . . .

8. Our 1986 winner is featured at Adrian’s Custard. Head back the way you came, walking along Bridge street to the next plaque . . . 

9. At 340 Bridge Street, our champion from 1989 will tickle your fancy. Walk to the corner and cross the railroad tracks, walk past McDonald’s and turn right.  Our next winner . . .

10. Located at the entrance to the Hampton Inn. This plaque features our 2010 winner. Continue on Dodge Street back to East Chestnut Street and turn left. At the corner . . .

11.  The Coffee House on Chestnut & Pine’s plaque touts our contest winner from 1937 . . .  

12. Walk to the end of the block where our 2011 winner is honored. Turn left and down the block on Washington Street . . .

13. The best tale from 1988 is posted. Return to Pine Street and cross to your left at the corner. Walk down to the end of the block where  . . .

14. The Burlington City Hall highlights our winner from 1979. Turn left and continue to the block . . .

15. Our first winner from 1929 is honored at the Burlington Police Department which is appropriate as Anton Delano was the police chief at the time. Cross the intersection to . . .

16. Fox River State Bank where you can see our 2006 winner. Head back up Jefferson Street to . . .

17. 2 Fancie Gals hosts our 2004 winner. Continue on a little way, looking down . . .

18. On ground level is our next winner from 1969. Head to the intersection and cross over to the library . . .

19. At the back entrance is our 1984 winner. Walk around to the front and continue on to Washington Street . . .

20. Flippy’s Fast Food houses our winner from 2005. Continue sauntering down Chestnut Street . . .

21. The Burlington Mercantile hosts our 2013 winner. . . .

22. At the corner, Thrivent displays the 1930 top entry. Cross over Chestnut Street and proceed to the next corner where . . .

23. Our winner from 1962 is located. Turn left, heading up Milwaukee Avenue to Chestnut, cross over and turn left . . .

24. Burlington Menswear features our 1976 top entry. Turn around and take a left at the corner, heading along Milwaukee Avenue . . .

25 A bit beyond The Plaza Theatre is our 1971 winner. Continue on and cross at the corner . . . 

26. Our last plaque is at Town Bank where our 1931 winner is featured. You are across the street from where you started. Hope you enjoyed your walk!
